【New System Starting from June 2026】
Japan will begin operating the new “Specified Residence Card” system from June 14, 2026, integrating the Residence Card and My Number Card into one single card.
With this new system, foreign residents will no longer need to visit their city office separately to update My Number information after renewing their residence status, making administrative procedures more convenient and efficient.
・ Residence status renewal information updated automatically
・ Can be used as a My Number health insurance card
・ Planned support for driver’s license integration
・ Permanent residents and certain visa holders may receive a 10-year validity period
・ Children over 1 year old will also have photo identification displayed
Please note that obtaining the integrated card will remain optional. Residents may continue using separate Residence Cards and My Number Cards if they prefer.
For foreign residents in Japan, managing taxes, pension payments, health insurance, and administrative procedures will become increasingly important in the future.
Understanding these legal and administrative changes correctly is essential in order to avoid future problems related to visa renewals or naturalization applications.
