Japan to Increase Residence Application Fees from October 1, 2026

The main procedures affected include:

  • Extension of Period of Stay(在留期間更新許可申請)
  • Change of Status of Residence(在留資格変更許可申請)
  • Application for Permanent Residence(永住許可申請)

New Fees for Extension and Change of Status of Residence

From October 1, 2026, the applicable fee will depend on the period of stay actually granted and whether the application is submitted in person or online.

Period of Stay Granted In Person Online
3 months or less ¥10,000 ¥10,000
More than 3 months to 6 months ¥18,000 ¥15,000
More than 6 months and less than 1 year ¥25,000 ¥21,000
1 year ¥33,000 ¥27,000
More than 1 year and less than 3 years ¥48,000 ¥42,000
3 years to less than 5 years ¥64,000 ¥56,000
5 years or more ¥75,000 ¥65,000

For example, if an applicant requests a five-year period of stay but is granted a one-year period, the fee corresponding to the one-year period will apply.

Permanent Residence Fee: ¥200,000

One of the most significant changes concerns Permanent Residence(永住許可).

The current fee of ¥10,000 will increase to:

¥200,000

The new fee will apply to Permanent Residence applications submitted on or after October 1, 2026.

Please note that ¥300,000 is the statutory maximum established by law, not the standard fee that applicants will pay. The actual Permanent Residence fee set for applications from October 1, 2026 is ¥200,000.

What If You Apply Before October 1?

Applications submitted by September 30, 2026 will be subject to the previous fees, even if permission is granted after October 1.

However, this does not mean that applicants should rush to submit an application without adequate preparation. In particular, applicants for Permanent Residence should first confirm that they meet the requirements and that all necessary documents are properly prepared.

What Foreign Residents Should Do

If you are planning to:

  • extend your period of stay;
  • change your status of residence; or
  • apply for Permanent Residence,

we recommend reviewing your situation and application timeline in advance.

Proper preparation can help prevent mistakes, delays, and unnecessary costs.
